Learning skills which can be used in the real world requires more than simply watching videos — it also requires practicing hands-on. That’s why we built advanced Live! Labs. Live! Labs are actual labs you can log in to and:
- Practice specific and real-world scenarios (troubleshooting, architecting and more)
- Play around in sandbox environments to get familiar with tools and services
As of today (10/31/16), we already have 116 of these labs across multiple topics — AWS, Azure, DevOps, Google Cloud Platform, Linux, Red Hat and OpenStack — and we’re working hard to launch far more labs in the coming months and in 2017. Not only because we wholeheartedly believe in hands-on training, but also because our students have told us they want more and we love providing our customers with more value!
We’re extremely excited to launch more labs in our existing lab categories and to launch labs in other sections we currently teach, such as DevOps tools and methodologies, Azure and Big Data.
Over time, we’ve had questions about these labs. This post is here to answer common questions — but if you have anymore questions not answered here, please post them in the comments below and we’ll be glad to answer them!
Live! Labs FAQ
Do these labs cost more?
No. They are included with every Linux Academy membership. You pay a flat monthly fee and gain access to labs without worrying about the cost of using resources.
Do you need an AWS account or server of your own to follow along?
Not at all. We provide temporary credentials for AWS labs and servers for others; we also provide 6 server labs with every single Linux Academy membership, which you can spin up at any time.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. We don’t believe in hidden fees. We try to be as transparent as possible, and that’s part of the reason why we offer so much under the same membership.
How many times can you go through a lab?
As many times as you want. There are no limits.
How much is a membership?
We have a free trial; here is more information.
How and when can you access labs?
There are multiple ways. Live! Labs are associated with courses, so you get access to them as-needed throughout the course syllabus. If you want to use labs on their own without going through a course, you can certainly do that as well. You can either click on “Labs” in the navigation bar, or you can search for a specific lab using the search bar.
Server labs are also accessible from the navigation bar. From the Server Lab control panel, you can choose a distribution per server. The distribution you need depends on the course you are following along with and what the instructor recommends. Once you choose a distribution and start the server, it will launch, and once launched you will be able to log in using the information under “Lab FAQ”.
Are Live! Labs scenario-based?
Live! Labs have downloadable lab guides and many also include video lessons. This enables you to follow along at your own pace and with your preferred learning method.
To learn, you are guided through the lab by an expert so you can see exactly how they do it. Then, once you’re comfortable, you can try the lab again without following along to see if you understand how it works. After all, practice makes perfect!
What is the difference between Live! Labs and self-paced labs?
They are the same. Live! Labs are self-paced labs. You launch the lab whenever you want and are given plenty of time to complete the scenario. Also remember that you can take them as many times as you want.
