Now Available: Chromecast Compatibility with Android App

Posted on July 19, 2017 by WinnieWinnie

We have some fantastic news for our Android fans. You’ve been asking for it, and now we’ve delivered! We’re so excited to announce that the Linux Academy Android app is now available with Chromecast support. That’s right – simply download the latest update of the Linux Academy App and start casting your favorite course videos to your Chromecast enabled device! Now you can relax on the sofa with your favorite snack and enjoy hands-free learning!

How Does This Work?

This update will allow you to stream our course videos directly from your Android device to your TV. Simply update your Linux Academy Android app, set up your Chromecast-enabled device, and then log in to the App on your Android device. You’ll see the Chromecast logo Cast_button_orange.jpg on the top right-hand corner of the screen. Click on it to start casting the videos to your TV.

We’ll be casting videos in the hangout room as we play pool and hack away at the latest new feature to implement for you guys. How do you like to watch our course videos?

Not an Android user? We have Apple TV support and an iOS app, as well!

Question: For the “Leave blog post comment” , is it referring to posting a comment here or for the videos you will be posting in the future? By the way, I would love both course videos and videos on new features.

Hi Prakyath,
Yes, we’d love to hear how you like to watch our course videos. With snacks on the couch? On the big screen while having lunch? While waiting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office? With Pinehead by your side? Let us know! 🙂

I have used Linux Academy in the past to refresh some of my skill gaps. I watched the courses and practiced on a Linux computer using Chrome. I like this method, and would like to see the course content continue to be made available for various browsers and Linux distros. I haven’t used the course material on a smart phone, but I think that’s a perfect use-case for traveling; downloading the course videos and listening offline!

I mostly watch at my desktop computer with the HTML5 player on 1.25x or 1.5x speed. Sometimes, I’ll watch out in public on my phone in the Android app with isolation earbuds. I’ve done that at some concerts while waiting for the bands to play… and I’ve watched one lesson on my TV (the Linux Essentials Networking video… 52 minutes) by casting my device’s screen to the TV via Chromecast. And I’ve watched a few while driving. Sorry.

I usually watch the viedos in my laptop, pause the video, practice a little and then resume the class. This is kind of unproductive. Having the ability to watch it on the TV whilst typing and reproducing the examples will surely make things easier and more productive.

I access Linux Academy through the website as well as the mobileapp. The mobile app is a great way to access quick nuggets if you are travelling or relaxing and want to catch up on some quick concepts or revise some lectures. For the following the structured learning plan and hands-on labs I always prefer the laptop. I would love-love-love to get more into Linux coding. Some of the newer production equipment that we have in our shop has become Linux based (Ubuntu and Xbuntu) and I am always having to find coding solutions for stupid things that people do. I would love to sit back on the weekends and binge watch a few lessons before my wife and kiddo wake up, or maybe with a bowl of popcorn on the couch after I watch Transformers for the 42nd time…
